Textile jewellery – more brooches

Fabric collage background in progressPurely for relaxation, I’ve been making some textile brooches, in the same way as I did the green hearts. Here’s my messy work desk with the collage background in progress (make the most of your sewing machine’s fancy stitches). The base cloth is just denim from some jeans that had worn through. Some of it is odds and ends from those fun scrap bins you get in fabric shops. The white cloth I dyed with Brusho (turning my hands temporarily blue in the process – note for future, wear gloves). I don’t even remember where the ribbon was from, just some short leftover bits in my craft stash.

Using net and sheer fabric was great for building up interesting layers. There has to be plenty of detail as the final brooches are only an inch or two – though of course you can add detail afterwards. I used various buttons, and some embroidery stitching on one of them. The ends all get hidden behind felt backing, which I attached with a blanket stitch edging.
